I am delighted to see that Alice Munro has won this year’s Man Booker International Prize. (Press release here).
Having recently read most of her work, Munro has become a great favourite of mine (to the point where I’m rationing out the few collections I haven’t read) . If you’re not acquainted with her masterful miniatures of writing, now would be a good time to fix that.
(My review of Alice Munro’s first book, Dance of the happy shades, is here for anyone who needs further persuasion.)

I thought I had read something of hers but in going over her work I don’t think I have. Unless I read stories and don’t remember the title. And I think I am well read.

I’ll be interested to hear what you think if you do read her Candy.

Oh, this is wonderful. I hadn’t seen the news yet. I think she is wonderful and I should sit down and read her entire collection one day – slowly, of course – you are right to ration yourself!

Hooray for Alice! She totally deserves it.

I was thrilled to see this. I’ve loved her stories (and also her novel, which I taught once in a Canadian lit class.) So sweet and sour and sharply observed. Fantastic stuff.

I agree, she is a fabulous writer. She came in to our bookshop a couple of times and was very gracious and very unassuming, which only made me admire her more!

I like your new look.

Yay for Alice Munro! I’m going to borrow / order / buy one of her books for sure now. Will let you know what I think but from a brief squizz of your review, I think I’ll like her style of thoughtful, closely described and meandering fiction.

Thanks Candy, I think it’s easier to read and I can customise the header when I can be bothered.

I was so happy to hear this too. I love her stories and it’s great that they’ve honoured such a great short story (and long story) writer

She is such a fabulous writer. Is Open Secrets one of the collections you’re rationing or have you already read it? I adored that book.

Hi Lesley, I read Open Secrets earlier this year and like yourself really enjoyed it.
